Chapter 11 A- the kingdom protista

the protozoans - first animals

11.1 General Characteristics

usually motile (able to move)

extremely fast or quick movements

most are found in water

the majority of the rest are found in dirt

some have pigment called eyespots that can detect light intensity and either move toward or away from it

during harsh environments many protozoans survive by creating a cyst

while the cyst is being formed the metabolic rate is slowed and a hard covering is formed around the protozoan

11.2 protozoan classification

members of the phylum sarcodina are characterized by their lack of standard body type

ectoplasm is the outer portion of the cell membraine

pellicle, a firm yet flexible protein-rich covering that is outside the cell membrane.

macronucleus appears to be multiple copies of the genetic material of the cell.

micronucleus functions during the exchange of genetic information during sexual reproduction.

trichocysts, which are tiny organelles under the pellicle, discharge stiff filaments into the water.

Paramecia also reproduce by a type of sexual reproduction called conjuga- tion

the members of the phylum Sporozoa are unique among protozoans since, as adults, they do not have pseudopodia, cilia, flagella, or any other special structures for locomotion.

The phylum Zoomastigina consists of the zooflagellates, protozoans that propel themselves by means of one or more flagella.
