Introduction to Fundamental Concepts of Chemistry
a branch of science , deals with the
composition, and properties of matter
Branches of chemistry
Organic Chemistry:
study of carbon containing substances
Inorganic Chemistry:
chemistry of elements and their compounds, except - carbon and hydrogen
Physical Chemistry:
force, and principles involved in the combination of atoms.
Analytical Chemistry:
study of methods and techniques used to determine the kind of quality of various compositions.
Biochemistry:
study of living organisms such as plants and animals.
Nuclear chemistry:
study of the changes occurring in the nuclei, emission of radiation
Industrial Chemistry:
study of chemical process involved in the industry of manufacture of synthetic products
Environmental Chemistry:
study of the interaction of chemical materials and their effects on environment
matter:
anything has wight and occupies space
states:
solid, liquid and gas
Element:
substance which cannot be split up , chemically .
Compound:
combination of two or more element in a definite proportion
Atom
Atomic Number
The number of
protons
in the nucleus.
no of proton = no of electron in an atom
Mass Number
sum of proton + neutron present in an atom
Ions:
an atom or group of atoms that has
lost or gained one or more electrons.
if lost electrons positively charged.
if gained electrons negatively charged.
Radicals:
Any ionized group of atoms
