Emma Vargas: Reflecting on My Growth through the Personal Project
Support
Supervisor because she gave me good tips on what to do. She gave me ideas for my project like take pictures, make sure the staff log in my hours, take pictures of my hours, etc.
Anita Martinez staff because they give me the opportunity to help. They tell me to take care of kids when they have a field trip, clean, help kids with their homework, etc.
TRM because they give me work to do.For example, helping little kids with their homework, reading to little kids, cleaning, etc.
Mindset
In between I started stressing out because I started to recognize all of them problems I was having like time, transportation, etc.
Towards the end I kind of gave up because I was having too much trouble with keeping up with everything and I just lost motivation to keep going.
At first I was excited because I really liked helping out people and I was extra excited because it would be within my community.
ATL Skills
I used thinking by trying to organize how many times I would have to help in order to complete my hours.
I used research by looking up places where I could go and help. For example, I researched TRM and Anita Martinez and that is where I am helping out now.
I used social by talking to most of the staff members by asking them if they need help with anything.
IB Traits
Principled because I am doing the right thing by helping out in my community. I say this because by helping out, then I am doing the right thing because helping out is good and I i=will benefit a lot from it.
Caring because by helping out then that shows I care about my community. I say this because I care about my community and I show it n=by helping out with anything they need.
Communicator because I communicate with my community. I do this by going out and help within my community. So I am communicating with the Community.
Learning Style
I also learn by touching because I would know the feeling of it. I would touch books and touch cleaning supplies so I can help out and understand what to do with the stuff.
I also learn by listening because I would know how it sounds like. I learned how to be a good reading buddy by listening to some meetings and I also learned how to clean the right way by listening to staff members.
I learn by looking at stuff because I would know how it looks like. I say this because for my project, I saw how people were helping out and I learned from that so it made it easier for me to help.
Challenges
Transportation because both of my parents are also busy.
Time because I'm really busy throughout the day. For example, I am busy throughout the whole week expect Tuesday but most of the time my parents get home late so I don't have a way to get over to TRM and Anita Martinez.
Motivation because I feel like giving up already. I say this because it's hard to find the right time to go and help because I am either busy or I don't have a way to get over there.
