It is used by interpretivists e;g interactionalists, this is because they want validity - they are against usig people and objects
Strengths
Very valid as it is a personal opinion, thoughts and feelings

Weaknesses
Unreliable because it can't be compared, this is useless for positivists as they want to see trends in data

Practical
May take a long time to gather data and sometimes hard to find as it is personal data - some however is already in the public domain e;g if it is from a famous person
Sometimes you need to pay for access to these documents, some can be obtained more cheaply if published widespread - famous person
Usually all in one place but still hard to obtain. It is difficult to analyse as it is qualitative data - handwriting can also be an issue
