Jo Whaley (American, 1953- )
Born in Sacramento, Jo Whaley earned an M.F.A. in painting and an M.A. in photography from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1978. She later worked as a scenic artist at the Zellerbach Playhouse at UC-Berkeley and the San Francisco Opera Company. Whaley's background in painting and scenic fabrication enriches the colorful and narrative photographic tableaux and still lifes for which she is known. She has received a Visual Artist Fellowship from the NEA and several Studio Grants from Polaroid Corporation. On leave from university teaching to pursue her photography, she lives in Oakland with her husband, photographer Greg MacGregor.
