Content and Relationship Messages
Content Messages
: focus on the real world, to something external to both speaker and listener.
Relationship messages
: focus on the relationship/connection between the individuals. Problems arise when these are misunderstood
Process of Adjustment
Principles of adjustment:
interpersonal communication can take place only to the extent that the people talking share the same communication system
Communication accommodation theory
: speakers will adjust to, or accommodate, the speaking style of their listeners
Power
Ability to influence or control the behavior of another person
Six Types of Power
Coercive
: have the ability to administer punishments to or remove rewards from others
Expert
: others see ou as having expertise or knowlege
Information or persuasion
: others see you as having the ability to communicate logically and persuasively
Reward
: you control the rewards that others want
Referent
: Others wish to be like you
Legitimate
: others believe you have power
Ambiguity
: message can be interpreted as having more than one meaning
Punctuated
Stimulus
: any external or internal change that impinges on or arouses an organism
Response
: any bit of overt or covert behavior

: divide up the various communication transactions in sequences of stimuli and responses
