Anatomy of endocrine
Thyroid
-
-
Controls:
- metabolism
- manufacture + potency hormones + proteins
- Calcium homeostasis
-
- Anterior surface neck
- 2 lateral lobes +isthmus
- Isthmus tracheal rings 2-4, tips of lobe +apex touch thyroid cart
Development:
- Outgrowth formane caecum of tongue (thyroglossal duct) 3rd week
- moves inferiorly
Duct left patent
- Butterfly shaped
- Final pos 6th week, production 12th
Supplied by:
superior thyroid artery (carotid)
inferior thyroid artery (subclavian)
Drained by thyroid veins: ( internal jug & braciocephalic)
Histology:
- Follicles: absorb iodine from blood, stored in thyroglobulin (colloid)
- Follicular cells: surround follicle cells: secrete T3 and T4
- Parafollicular cells: throughout, secrete calcitonin
-
TH synthesis
- Active uptake and conc of iodide: Na I symporter: basolateral cell memb
- Conc iodide diffuses into lumina: diffusion
- TPO: oxides iodide and iodination of thyroglobulin occurs
- Iodide + tyrosine: MIT and DIT
- T3 and T4
-
-
Hypothalamus
-
-
-
Paraventricular: (magnocelullar cells = oxytocin +ADH)
Parvocellular cells = releasing hormones
Several groups of neurons:nuclei
-
Parathyroid gland
-
-
-
Histology
-
Oxyphil cells
larger, periphery, unknown
- Released in response to falling Ca2+ levels
- Calcium sensing receptors in PTH
-
-
-
Pancreas
Retroperitoneal:
- uncinate process
- Head + uncinate enclosed by duodenum
- portal vein behind neck of pancreas
- Tail tickles spleen
- splenic artery: superior border
Exocrine + endocrine:
- Vasoactive intestinal peptide
- pancreatic polypeptide
- motilin, serotonin and P
Exocrine: secretion of substance through duct
-
-
- Increase glucose uptake into fat and muscle
- Glycogen synthesis
- Storage of triglyceride in adipose tissue
- Protein syntheis (uptake of amino acid)
- Decrease hepatic gluconeogenesis
- initiates protein kinase cascades
- increase glycolysis in liver, increases synthesis of fatty acids
Kidney
Inputs:
- Pituitary
- Aderanal
- Parathyroid
-
-
-
Ca2+
Phosphate
Vitamin D
1,25(OH)2D: calcitriol
- Increase bone resorption
- increased absorption of dietary calcium and phosphate
- Inhibits PTH
