INTERVIEWS : STRUCTURED INTERVIEWS
DEFINITION: A structured interview is a questionnaire filled out by an interviewer in a set order. Its quantitative because its given to everyone and data can be collected and compared. Its used by Positivist because its reliable and practical, using it to if there are any trends or anything predictable.
THEORETICAL
(GOOD) They are more valid than mailed questionnaires as you can examine peoples expressions and body language
(GOOD) Very reliable- as you can compare responses and its possible to repeat again.
(GOOD) 100% response rate. This means you can gain a representative sample. However, it may not be large as its time consuming.
(BAD) Lacks validity, as the use of closed fixed choice questions limits what the interviwee can say.
(BAD) It's socially desirable = the interviewee will give an answer the they think they interview wants to hear, which may nit even be true.
ETHICAL
(GOOD) they can debrief the interviewees ( cannot do on questionnaires )
( GOOD) You are present and can reassure people when they are distressed
(GOOD) you can still promise to keep information confidential
(BAD ) in an interview you cannot be anonymous
PRACTICAL:
(GOOD) Very practical because:
much quicker than UI especially when using closed questions
100% response rate- therefore better than mailed questionnaire
Quantitative data, so its quick and easy to analyse
Saves money - don't need to post questionaries
(BAD) Not as time saving as mailed questionnaires as you need to be present for each interviewee
