Plate Tectonics
Plate Boundaries
Convergent Plate Boundaries -> boundaries of destruction. Rock changed or destroyed as plates collide.
3 types:
- Ocean-ocean
- Ocean-continent
- Continent-continent
Divergent Plate Boundaries -> boundaries of construction. New rock formed, mid-ocean ridges form. Plates separate and move away
Conservative Plate Boundaries -> passive boundaries. Rock neither created nor destroyed. Plates slide past each other
Position Of Ireland:
380m years ago -> moved south of equator. North Ireland above the sea level, south was below.
350m years ago -> sea level rose, covering Ireland
400m years ago -> plates collide, forming Ireland. Folding, faulting occurring
-
-
200m-140m years ago -> continental drift, Ireland moved north

Plate Tectonic Theory:
Plates move, fuelled by convection currents
Movements result in volcanic/ earthquake activity, folding and faulting.
-
Sea-Floor Spreading
-
Proof: Samples from ocean floor; new crust younger where magma cooled at mid-ocean, older to continents
Plates split apart, ocean floor widens, new rock is formed
