COMM 776
Media, Stereotypes, Identity
Main concepts: Social Identity Theory . Identification with media figures. Schemas. Monroe et al. (2000) covers a lot of this.
Monroe et al. (2000): -Personal vs. group identity. -Schema theory. -Social representation theory. -Models of prejudice (e.g., symbolic racism, etc.)
Dixon (2008): Correlational study of exposure to crime news and belief in Black criminality. Moderators/mediators: Attention to crime news, trust in news.
People: Dixon (Race), Mastro (Race/ethnicity), Harrison (Gender)
Mastro (2009): Overview of various effects of racial/ethnic stereotyping in the media. Audience characteristics and media consumption stats. Depictions in the media from various content analyses.
Martins & Harrison (2012): Longitudinal; TV exposure led to decrease in self-esteem for girls and Black boys, but an increase for White boys. Concepts: global self-esteem.
Dixon & Williams (2014): -Content analysis. Notes that these must be done repeatedly; Dixon has done several. Found evidence of erasure of Blacks as victims and criminals, due to focus on Muslim terrorist and Latino "illegal" immigrant tropes.

Emotion
-
Discrete Emotions: different emotions produce different cognitive and action tendencies #
Appraisal tendency frameworks (see Lerner, Roseman, Smith & Ellsworth)
Applications:
-
-
-
Political research: emotion and voting (see Neuman, Brader, Valentino)
Risk perception: discrete emotion and perception of risk after terrorist attacks (see Jennifer Lerner)
History: Emotion was frequently undervalued (irrationality is not wanted in democracy), but researchers have come to acknowledge the role of affect in information processing and decision-making. Some debates remain over what comes first, cognition or affect
