What is it?

It is meant for students to create an understanding of people and themselves in relation to the people around them and in the world. Through learning about history, geography, society, culture, religion, and other social sciences. By doing so, they will foster a greater individual understanding and involvement with the many issues that face them. With the goal for students to create an identity for themselves.

What Is Its Role?

To mold students to be engaged, active, informed and responsible citizens that resect their individual and others individual collective identity. For students to see the need for social cohesion and the importance of an effective functioning society from a pluralistic viewpoint.

What Is Its Goal?

"To foster understanding of the roles and contributions of linguistic, cultural, and ethnic groups in Canada." Trough practice on researching current affairs and controversial issues and then taking a stand on such subjects

Outcomes of KSA's

To provide students with the knowledge of their rights and responsibilities so they can be actively engaged in understanding diversity, and social cohesion. Especially between different groups of people, and to understand the role of society and in their lives and their lives in society

To provide students with the ability to think critically and objectively about issues both global and local. To engage them in ethical decision making and becoming more aware of their consequences. To have them reflect on the information the receive and apply it to their lives

Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate social compassion, liberty, and justice. To demonstrate that they have a global consciousness with humanity and world issues.

For students to have a positive attitude when talking about others values and beliefs. Respect one another, and to develop ideas and values of their own and the natural world.

For students to research issues that are based on information, correct concepts, evidence and then formulate their own opinion on the subject.

For students to communicate their ideas clearly through deliberate research, different dimensions of thinking, learning to cooperate with others and foster relationships.

What are some strands for Social Studies educators to focus on?

Time, continuity, and change so students may appreciate the breadth of what they are learning from the past and how they can better face the future.

Places and people so students can see the important relationships that affected our present day society and how the physical geography and played in important role in it.

Power, Authority, and Decision Making to broaden students understanding of how governments work and how this can impact individuals, communities, and nations

Economics and Resources so that students can have an understanding of how local resources are used and this can affect their quality of life

What should we assume about learners of Social Studies and those that teach it?

Students should create their own perspectives on their ideas through their experiences with the issues presented. They should create their own context through these things and then make a reasoned and informed judgements for themselves and sometimes for the public good.

Teachers should focus on the specific content for each grade level and be prepared and anticipate and issues that could come from presenting current affairs and controversial isses

What does it mean to accommodate diversity and how does it affect us?

Diversity can enrich our lives through recognizing the differences as positive aspects and being aware that people experience life differently

It means to respect other rights, responsibilities, values, government, and laws

We create diversity by manifesting our contributions to immigration and multiculturalism.
