DEFINITION OF UNION
- A trade union is any association of workers or employers whose main aim is to regulate relations between employers and workmen for any of the following purposes:
a) To promote good industrial relations between workers and employers.b) To improve the working conditions, as well as the economic and social statusc) To increase productivity for the benefit of workmen, employers and the economy of Singapore.
PURPOSE OF UNION
- protect the "rights" of an employee and make sure that things such as wages, working hours, and contracts are kept at a fair level
DEFINITION OF UNION FORMATION
- The Industrial Relations Act states that a trade union representing its members in collective bargaining and has to be first accorded recognition by the employer.
REASON TO FORMING A UNION
- Employees can solve problems at work more effectively as a group. Through forming a union and negotiating a contract, employees can secure the things they like about their job, and they can make changes in areas that need improvement.

Collective Bargaining
- agreement between an employer and the trade union on the employees’ terms and conditions of employment. The Collective Agreement is valid for a minimum of 2 years and a maximum of 3 years. Once a Collective Agreement is signed, it has to be filed to the Industrial Arbitration Court for certification within one week from the date of signing
Collective Agreement
- can be initiated by either the employer or the trade union. The party who wishes to commence negotiations for a Collective Agreement is required to serve a notice and the receiving party is required to accept the invitation to negotiate. Negotiations between the employer and the trade union should commence as early as possible.
