Research on conformity to group norms (8)
INTRODUCTION
distinction between private + public conformity
private = private acceptance of social norms
Baron et al.= "a type of influence in which individuals change their attitudes or behaviour to adhere to existing social norms"
public = overt behaviour consistent with social norms that aren't privately accepted
conformity refers to social norms
conformity to group norms is concerned with public conformity
CONCLUSION
little concern about the accuracy of our expressed beliefs when in fear or social disproval / rejection
pp's in Asch (1951) demonstrate conformity to group norms
type of influence based on our need to be liked + accepted by others
stimuli were unambiguous + pp's explained their conformity in terms of desire to be accepted by rest of group
normative influence underlies conformity to the expectation of others
Asch (1951)
pp's answered last
confederates deliberately gave the wrong answers in attempt to influence pp's
76 pp's conformed on at least 1 trial
Asch then made pp's sate their answers aloud in presence of 6 other pp's (confederates)
only 24% remained independent throughout
pp's thought they were taking part in a study of visual perception
pp's later explained their conformity as an attempt to avoid criticism + social disproval
pp's nearly always right when performing task alone
pp's asked to indicate 1 of 3 lines that matched in length to the standard line
