The role of situational and dispositional factors in explaining behaviour (8)
INTRODUCTION
according to Heider, we're inclined to attribute someone's behaviour to dispositional (internal) factors or situational (external)
people tend to make attributions based on whether they're performing themselves / observing (actor-observer effect)
1 way people interpret + explain causal relationships is through attribution
SLA = scientifically investigates how society + culture affect our behaviour
CONCLUSION
dispositional / situational causes of behaviour are attributed to people to explain certain behaviours
however, the general trend of attribution shows that errors can occur in this process
positive outcomes of individual behaviour = dispositional
negative outcomes of individual behaviour = situational
positive outcome of others behaviour = situational
negative outcome of others behaviour = dispositional
ZIMBARDO 1971
randomly assigned pp's to role of guard / prisoner (IV)
DV = behaviour observed through direct observation, video + audiotape
Method:
Zimbardo created stimulation of prison
Results:
guards become aggressive + dominant
Aim:
investigate how people react in different situations
prisoners became passive, depressed + anxious
conclusion:
demonstrated situational rather than dispositional factors caused negative behaviour + thoughts found in this prison setting
shows how people can use situational / dispositional attribution to explain behaviours of certain people
