Ethical considerations related to research studies at the SLA (8)
INTRODUCTION
ethical standards made by APA include;
protection of pp's
confidentiality
right to withdraw
in psychology, ethics must be considered to ensure humans/animals participating aren't harmed
consent
SLA = scientific study of how society + culture affect human behaviour
avoidance of deception
debriefing
Asch (1951)
Asch was interested as to whether pp's would conform to these obviously wrong answers
ethical issues
confederates deliberately gave wrong answers
(informing of the aim + true nature may have resolved in pp bias)
asked to choose 1 of 3 lines that most resembled the height of line on the left
consent:
pp's not informed of the true nature of the experiment + aims of study before giving consent
1 pp + 7 confederates
deception:
pp's deceived about true aim + nature of study + confederates
debriefing:
pp's were debriefed after experiment
pp protection:
pp's may have experienced stress + pressure to conform. may have felt embarrassed / lost self-esteem when finding out true nature of study
CONCLUSION
consent
confidentiality
right to withdraw
avoidance of deception
protection of pp's
debriefing
ethical considerations in all areas of psychology research:
slight exceptions for consent + deception depending on aim + nature of experiment
animal research also has different ethical considerations
