Principles that define the SLA (8)
INTRODUCTION
made up of 4 principles
1.
humans = social animals + thus have the need to belong
SLA = scientific study of how people's thought, feelings + behaviour are influenced by the presence of others
2.
culture influences behaviour
3.
humans have a social self
4.
people's view of the world = resistant to change + developed by the community + culture
CONCLUSION
humans have a social self
however, views from all levels of analysis need to be taken into account before reaching a determined decision on what influences human behaviour
culture influences behaviour
2 were outlined in this essay
4 main principles that define SLA
PRINCIPLE 2
strong situational influences may cause us to put own own beliefs to the side in order for us to be accepted
Asch (1951) conducted a study that demonstrated conformity
social + cultural environments might change our behaviour for us to conform to group social norm
today we live in a multi-cultural society
we need to understand effect of culture on people's behaviour + thus cultural differences
research into conformity outlines social norms + how they regulate our social behaviours
behaviour can be influenced by the social + cultural environment
culture influences behaviour
PRINCIPLE 3
our social identity defines who we are
people not only have an individual identity but a collective / social one
Zimbardo et al. (1971) supports this principle
dependent on the types of groups we belong to
showed that our social self is constructed by our own conceptions of our self (prisoner / guard)
we construct our social identity through the social self
thus, we will act in a way that fits with these conceptions
humans have a social self
