Principles that define the SLA demonstrated in research (8)
Introduction
consists of 4 principles
1.
humans = social animals + thus have a need to belong
SLA = scientific study of how people's thoughts, feelings and thus behaviours are influenced by the presence of others
2.
culture influences behaviour
3.
humans have a social self
4.
people's view of the world = resistant to change + developed by the community + culture
these principles allow us to allow us to understand how behaviour can be caused/influenced by social factors
Conclusion
culture influences behaviour - Asch 1951
demonstrated how our social group may affect behaviour
4 principles that define the SLA - 1 of which was outlined in this essay
however, views from all level of analysis should be taken into account before reaching a determined conclusion about influences on human behaviour
social cultural factors such as environment play a role in the interaction between itself and behaviour, however its not the sole cause of the behaviour
Asch 1951
Aim:
test the extent of conformity in a non-ambiguous task
Method:
1 pp amongst 7 confederates
reinforces idea that the pressure of others influences our behaviour
Findings:
eg. some cultures eat with a knife and fork, whereas others might eat with chopsticks or their hands
asked to judge which 3 lines corresponded to the length of line on the left
Culture influences human behaviour
confederates deliberately gave wrong answers
research into conformity outlines social norms + how they regulate our social behaviours
3 conditions for the pp; answering publicly / written privately / with a supporting confederate
32% conformity rate
74% of pp's conformed at least once
conformity rate dropped when pp answered privately
conclusion:
people change their behaviour in accordance with others
