The objective of discipline is not to simply deal out punishment. Instead, it is to correct an employee’s undesirable behaviour. Punishment is one of the means of doing so, but not the primary objective.

Following the Hot-Stove Rule, discipline must have immediate response, advanced warning, consistent action and interpersonal application.

Although the disciplinary actions and procedure generally depend on the situation, it is more desirable for discipline to be progressive.
