FRENCH REVOLUTION 1789
CAUSES
Absolute monarchy
Writers such as Montesquie Rousseau
inspired many people to rise up and rebel against monarchy who ruled countries unfairly
The French King
had run out of money
because French was involved in a lot of war
Luois XVI spent a lot of money on extravagant places
In order to get more money:
to raise taxs that was paid by the
3rd Estate
In order to raise taxs a vote had to be taken by Estate General
THE ESTATE GENERAL
2 nd Estate - Nobility
3 rd Estate - Everyone else
1 st Estate - Catholic Church
Each estate had One vote therefore:
The 1st and 2nd Estate out numbered the 3rd Estate 2 to 1
The 3rd Estate was not only made up of peasants but also of bankers, teachers, soldiers
they were so unhappy with having to pay even more taxs
NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
was set up on the 20th June 1789

The National Assembly then met at a Tennis Court

the poor of Paris rose up and stormed the Bastille
a prison seed as a symbol of the cruelty of the jing and the power of 1st Estate and 2nd Estate (the prison was taken easily)
FLIGHT TO VARENNES
in 1791 the king decided to flight in Holland where his wives brother ruled
however he was recognise in Varennes and brought back to Paris
