Compression and File types
JPG - Compressed Bitmap, the level of the compression can be adjusted with a .JPG
GIF - Simple graphics, short animations
PDF - Portable Document Format, these cannot be altered without specific software but are easy to view. This is the open standard for document exchange.
.MP3 - Cuts any sound above or below human hearing, some differences can be noticed.
MPG - Video and audio compressed to reduce file size
File compression is trying to encode the same data using fewer bits.
Read only memory
This stores the instructions the computer uses when it boots up. This is known as the BIOS. BIOS = Basic Input Output System.
The BIOS is only used when a computer is first turned on.
Non-volatile: Does not loose data stored when no power is running.
Can be read but not changed
Random Access Memory
Volatile so looses data if there is no power running.
RAM also stores any applications which are prominently running.
RAM allows the fast access of different applications.
A computer crashes when it is overloaded in RAM
