but, nonetheless, however, yet, on the other hand
Remember what you read: memory
Memory myths
: It is not necessarily the amount of information but rather the attitude towards it.
Stress
damages the human memory system
Memory is not a stand-alone system - relies on attention and reasoning, Memory is not based on isolated facts, Everything you remember is connected to the other piece of information in your memory, retrieval is greatly based on association the more it is organized easy to recall it, new information relies on old information and vice versa
Trained memory / untrained memory
what is good for your body is good for your mind.
How memory works:
acquisition - absorbing information
retention - keeping it in your head
retrieval - getting it out again
Memory acquisition:
pay attention
Plan (when you are likely to use the info you read)
be interested
be active ( read actively)
Stop the internal talk going inside your head before reading
Memory Retention:
memory thrives on association and order
Dont need to keep everything in your head - keep them organized in a paper or db where you recall it
Memory Retrieval:
Visual (internal picture of how it looks like)
Sound auditory
Recall last time you walked in and out (kinaesthetic and proprioceptive)
Emotional (feeling the last time you locked yourself out)
olfactory (smell the fresh coat of paint)
Importance of concentration:
Meditate and practise absolute concentration for hours
Improving concentration:
Interest and motivation
Mental numbers A to Z; 1 - A - 2 - B
Techniques for remembering what you read:
Linear
: Make notes after each section - should include your own thoughts, ideas, and cross-reference
Keywords
: Highlight the words that carry the message
Margin reading
: underline, circle, highlight essential areas, note your opinions, whether you agree or disagree and mark what you do or don't understand and do something about that "not understanding"
Mind-Mapping:
Place the key idea in the centre
Main ideas form thick branches from the centre
secondary ideas
Tertiary ideas and so on till the finest relevant detail
use colours and symbols
