Development Dilemmas
Development
Development means making progress so that people's lives improve. However, lives can improve in different ways
For instance, having more money, living longer, or knowing your children can get an education
-
The different types of development can be split into different groups, based on what they help to achieve
Economic development
An increase in the number of people working in the secondary and tertiary employment sectors - leading to rising incomes
A lot of people assume that economic development must result in life improvement, however this is not always the case.
Living in polluted, congested cities might worsen health and increase stress
Incomes could rise, but so could the cost of living -food, water, housing- especially in cities
Social development
Rising life expectancy, better healthcare and access to education;' improved equality - leading to improved quality of life
Political development
Improving political freedom and the right to vote; a free press and freedom of speech - leading to greater control over who governs you.
Measuring development

Some countries are ranked higher by HDI than their GDP per capita. Cube has an HDI of 0.78, but a GDP per capita of only $6100
