VARIABLES
-
-
-
-
Other factors that could influence the DV: extraneous variables - if not taken into account and have effect on DV they become confounding variables
-
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN
Repeated Measures Design - all p's take part in both conditions
Independent Groups Design - recruited p's are split into 2 groups 9different people take part in two conditions
Matched Participants - tries to achieve balance between problems raised by ^ designs: one group recruited and then another is found as closely matched to p's in first group as possible
R M: :check: Need less participants, :check: Eliminates individual differences between groups. :red_cross: Order effects (practice + fatigue), :red_cross: Demand characteristics (both taken part in both).
I G: :check: No order effects, :check: Less chance of demand characteristics. :red_cross: Need more participants, :red_cross: More individual differences.
M P: :check: Reduces the likelihood of individual differences having an effect. :red_cross: Difficult to match p's.
DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS
-
↳ Single-Blind procedure: p's kept in dark about aims of research (can also use form of DECEPTION in order to overcome DC)
↳ Double-Blind procedure: researcher gathering data kept in dark about some aspects of study as well as p
CORRELATIONS
Don't have IV and DV, have co variables: two variables you'll measure (both must produce a number)
E.g. 'the relationship between obsessive thoughts about safety and checking behaviour'
Co Variable A: number of self-reported obsessive thoughts in an hour
Co Variable B: number of times an individual washes their hands in the hour
-
PILOT STUDIES
Small scale version of 'real' study - like a trial run
Purpose: to identify problems + obtain feedback from p's about problems they encountered
Any identified problems can be dealt with before main study
INVESTIGATOR EFFECTS :
Characteristics of researcher can influence p's behaviour + results of study (age, gender, ethnicity, their skill at conducting research/designing questionnaires/conducting interviews)
