The article mentions historical examples of over sensationalization of crime through media outlets, which then influences policy debates. The method of research used was interviewing crime news reporters to discover how the news sources influence media overall, as well as analyzing the media coverage of crime. The authors found that an increased production of crime and law television shows and increased discussion of crime in news outlets has lead an overall growth of the public culture of fear.
