Air Pollution
Science Facts
Air pollution is made of solid particles and gases in the air. Car emissions, chemicals, dust, pollen and mold spores may be suspended as particles. Ozone is a major part of air pollution in cities. When ozone forms air pollution, it's also called smog.
Particulate Matter: describe a complex group of air pollutants that vary in size and composition, depending upon the location and time of its source.
-
Today, Americans use 384 billion gallons of oil per day for transportation alone…. that results in the production of 7.3 trillion pounds of carbon dioxide every day.
derives 85 percent of its energy from fossil fuels compared to the 7 percent acquired from renewable sources\

-
Air pollution is caused by the deposits of harmful gases into the atmosphere that include carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane, sulfur and chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs.
Indoor air pollution involves exposures to particulates, carbon oxides, and other pollutants carried by indoor air or dust. Examples include:
Gases
Household products and chemicals
Building materials
Outdoor indoor allergens
Tobacco smoke
Mold and pollen
Solution
-
-Promote the development of clean, renewable, and
environmentally-friendly energy sources
-
-Converting to sources such as solar, wind, and geothermal will produce electricity without carbon emissions
-
Air pollution can be reduced both inside and outside the home by avoiding the use of chemicals or not allowing a car to idle.
Socioeconomic
-
Air pollution caused by energy production in the U.S. caused at least $131 billion in damages in the year 2011 alone
In 2002, the damages totaled as high as $175 billion
Ontario Medical Association has estimated that air pollution costs more than $1 billion a year in hospital admissions, emergency room visits, and absenteeism.
Clean air will also contribute substantially to the long term competitiveness of the Canadian economy
new technologies, cleaner fuels, science and research, electricity production and conservation, alternative transportation, and new forms of infrastructure can stimulate economic growth
