OVERFISHING
Science Facts
Fish that are large in size, live a long time and are slow to reproduce are among the most vulnerable to overfishing. Unfortunately, this includes some of our favorite seafood. For instance, of the 465 shark species assessed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, 74 are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered.
The latest research suggests that around 100 million sharks may be killed annually, often targeted for their fins.
Due to overexploitation and lack of proper management, many shark species are under considerable risk of unrecoverable decline with some species having declined to near extinction in recent years. According to reports, sharks are being killed at an alarming rate of up to 273 million worldwide per year.
One billion people rely on fish as their primary source of protein. The ocean provides more than half of our oxygen. Healthy fish populations keep the ocean healthy.
For centuries, our seas and oceans have been considered a limitless bounty of food. However, increasing fishing efforts over the last 50 years as well as unsustainable fishing practices are pushing many fish stocks to the point of collapse.
Many sharks are caught as accidental bycatch in longlines, trawls, and nets targeting other species. Bycatch is simply the proportion of unwanted catch returned to the sea after fishing. Sharks are highly migratory and they often swim in groups that are the same size and age. This can mean that a key part of the population (mature females for example) can be wiped out in one fell swoop.
Many fisheries around the world throw away more fish than they keep—some of the biggest offenders are shrimp fisheries. In the worst cases, for every pound of shrimp caught, up to six pounds of other species are discarded and this incidental catch of unwanted or unsellable species, known as "bycatch," doesn't just include fish—turtles, seabirds and other animals also suffer.
