Chapter Four: The Work of Creativity
Creativity in the work field
Many people in the same work field have different creative ideas.
Robert Galvin once said, "Creativity consists of anticipation and commitment" (p. 77).
Anticipation: means that you have a dream that there is going to be something important in your future.
Commitment: the belief that all the work you put in to your dream will make it come true.
Being creative is about the
new
. We have to learn to adjust to new things that in the future will help us be more creative.
The Emergence of Problems
Three main sources that cause problems to typically arise:
personal experiences
requirements of a domain
social pressures
It is possible to have creative thoughts when you are unprepared. But usually, the creative ideas will pop into your head when you have thought a lot about the issue at hand.
Presented and Discovered Problems
Presented Problems: when the problem is already formed. the only thing that is missing is the solution to the problem.
Discovered Problems: when the the question has not been asked, but the problem and the solution have already been identified.
Life as a Source of Problems
It is known that Artist find their inspiration in the life that they are living. They use their emotions, to describe events that are taking place; such as birth or death, war or peace, and even the the area that they reside in.
"Without a burning curiosity, a lively interest, we are unlikely to persevere long to make a significant new contribution." (p.87).
We have to find the drive of curiosity to want to gain knowledge, and learn new things.
The Pressures of the Human Environment
The life that we are living can help us spark new ideas everyday. We are all surrounded by people that we look up to and even people who look up to us, and of course the society that we live in. All of these things can help direct our career or get us thinking in new directions.
We all struggle with personal issues in life. We are all able to stop these problems from spreading by having a creative thought change our thinking to how we can solve the issue that we are struggling with.
The Influence of Past Knowledge
"'
Impara l'arte, e mettila da parte
' this means learn the craft and then set it aside," (p. 90).
This year in college I realized how important this was. A lot of my knowledge from high school, has been helping me in my years at Cornerstone.
Overall, having past knowledge on what you're learn will hep you in the long run. For example, you have to knowledge on math to be able to do physics.
