- - - - Enter Communication. I was not exactly sure how to demarcate disciplinary differences coming into the program, but I quickly learned that my future was more in the Communication sphere. This is due to a focus on critical analysis of communication media.
      - I mainly focused on ideological critiques in my master's work. It seems like most people follow that path, as it is a bit easier to wrap one's head around. As I continue, I specialize more on epistemic and ontological questions regarding the power/knowledge deterrorializations and reterritorializations caused by new media. Packer's Epistemology Not Ideology is a great pieces that helped me toward this path.
      - Disipline
    - - While 701 and 703 have been my jams, not so much to 702 and 704. In particular, 702 helped my mainly to realize that I do not want to continue in rhetoric and composition. Nothing personal, but it is not for me.
      - Coursework
      - Film, Comedy, and Modernity was a great course, in that it allowed me to read more theorists like Habermas, Hansen, Jameson, and Hutcheon. In particular, I got to work through questions of modernity and postmodernity, which strengthened my depth of knowledge.
      - The Deleuze and Guattari seminar was the most challengingclass I have ever taken, which is awesome! I like the focus of their work, particularly the way they combine criticism with activist potentiality.
      - I've taken methods courses before, but Critical Methods was great as well. Not only did it help with periodization and separating different forms of criticism, but helped me to focus my own work.
    - - Dissertation

    - - Challenges and opportunities
        
        I don't find it too hard to articulate "what I do", as I came in with a focus that I have worked to hone. It is always important to continue to evolve and further specialize in order to become a true expert.
        
        More to this point, the challenge I constantly face is the whole "the more I learn, the less I know" paradox. Being a critical scholar takes lots of reading and work to understand conversations. It is easy to level pithy critiques--that is what we are encouraged to do in master's programs in order to learn to criticize and make arguments. But to truly add to the field takes more--one must be willing to read and listen. It is more important to ask what we can use or build upon from previous conversations instead of making blanket rejections that would fail under scrutiny. It is important to allow oneself to just take in information without pretending to know all the answers.
