I always thought empathy was something that we are born knowing how to do, and not something that we need to be actively practicing and working on
How to avoid and recognize empathy traps: "My problem is bigger than yours"
"At least....."
Trying to fix the problem before they've actually explained the issue

Received very helpful feedback after draft 1 was submitted. Felt more comfortable as a group moving forward on our project.
The video about Grover Nordquist was so interesting to me. It was amazing to see how much power one person wields, while saying he doesn't have much power at all.

Each week connected well because each workshop/seminar discussion was tied the to real-life situations. Absorbing all of the material each week was manageable because I could actually implement some things in my current job. Learning about different leadership styles, empathy, WA state constitution, Federal policies and tribal governance are all important in my work. For topics that I'm not able to practice right now, I know will be vital in future job opportunities. Some valuable experiences I had from fall were:
- Being mindful of my contributions to our learning community (not participating enough)
- I have no say in who I work for or with. The public is found in many different areas, and I need to have an unbiased service mindset.
- Finding my voice and speaking my truth
How are these experiences tied into this week's reading?
Leadership skills are learned through a multitude of experiences, some negative and some positive. Throughout the duration of my career, i will face mountains of adversity, but how I react and learn from these experiences will be most important. Being open to other leadership styles and effectively listening to all stakeholders will help me work on keeping biases in check.
