Social Well Being
Family and Friends
Emotional Need; whilst unsettled at hospital patients can become difficult and this could be largely due to the patients being emotional unstable i.e unhappy, depressed, stressed. Speaking to friends/family may give you the emotional boost you need to stay positive throughout your stay as they understand your normal emotional patterns and what may cheer you up.
Social Need; speaking to somebody helps to achieve the social needs that features in the majority of peoples personalities. Therefore having family and friends come see you in hospital reaches that end perfectly.
Spiritual Need; due to you placing yourself within social groups that are similar to yourself and therefore if you are a spiritual individual your group may be spiritual. Consequently during your stay in hospital you may not have achieved your spiritual needs and therefore your visitor may bring you a means to meet that end. This may be the difference between being in a settled and in a good mood throughout your stay in hospital.
Reassurance; having an associate or friend to talk to you about your treatment or medication allows you to not only hear it another opinion, but also your own opinion aloud. From here you are able to receive reassurance about your stay as a whole, which can help to de-stress you. And this obviously makes your stay a whole lot easier and comfortable.
Advocate and Consent; in certain situations patients may not be able to fully consent for themselves or may not be willing and therefore you would need somebody to advocate for you. This is especially important in cases which feature the individual is incapacitated or permanently unconscious,
Plan Discharge; when your stay in hospital eventually comes to a close you need a plan for the immediate aftercare and friends/family can help plan this. Having this ability makes aftercare incredibly easy as you are able to concentrate on getting better in hospital not worrying how your going to go home for example.
In contact with outside world; whilst staying away from home you can begin to miss the little things that happen within your home. When people who are part of your life come visit you they are able to notify of any changes in this world. And whilst this may make you feel home sick it does however give you the sense of belonging even though you are in hospital.
Intellectual Stimulation; simply holding conversations with anyone offers your mind stimulation but your friends and family know what makes you tick and therefore the effect is enhanced. This familiarity helps to achieve this stimulation by making "playful comments", bringing in favoured puzzles or simply holding interest conversations.
Familiar Face; seeing friends and family, even if you do not necessarily get to speak to them, have a massive effect on your general happiness levels. This is due to the fact that they offer a sense of familiarity and home in a very dull and plain environment.
