How to Complete a Discretionary Fund Application
Step1**
;
Visit www.uws.ac.uk/funds & decide which student catagory best fits your circumstances**
In our example we will be a full time undergraduate student. It is important to note that some types of student are restricted in the funding available to them. So please be sure to read carefully the section which relates to your circumstances before applying
When you click on the appropriate section, it expands to tell you more about the fund and provides all the guidance documents you will need to complete an application
There are forms you will need to compete: Discretionary Fund Application Form and (if relevant) Childcare form which is completed by your childcare provider
There are 2 guidance documents on Registered and Unregistered childcare which detail our regulations and application proceedures for applying for each type of childcare. Please ensure you read these carefully before applying
There are then a range of supporting documents to help you to complete the application process.
There are guidance notes which our team follow to assess the application. Reading these allows you insight into who is eligible, what you can apply for, how you can apply and what we will do with the application.
There is a guide on how to complete the actual application. It details what you need to have to hand; each section of the application form and what these relate to, there is special detailled attention given to the current finances section. This includes how to treat your income and how to work out your financial situation. This is followed by a list of acceptable evidence which we require to complete the application. The evidence you submit will depend on your own personal situation and we will go into this in more detail later in the guide.
We have provided some sample evidence to help you to understand what and how to highlight on your bank statment and what sort of information your parents should include in a statement to confirm your dig money.
If you find you need additional space to list your creditors, we have supplied an additional sheet here
If you find it easier to use excel to work out your household income/expenditure, we have provided a spreadsheet for you to complete. A top tip is to use your bank statement and this combined to help you work out accurate expenditure before completing the application.
Step 2
:
Read all the appropriate Guidance Notes and paperwork
Step 3
:
Completing your application
. So now you have read all the guidance notes and you have got everything ready. You are now able to start completing the application form.
Section 1
details your personal situation and gives us information on who is in your household
Section 2
tells us about your studies
Section 3
gives an overview of your childcare and indicates to us how many childcare forms should be attached and who should have completed them
Section 4
is an important opportunity to give us any relevant information that is not detailled elsewhere in the form. For example, if you have just had to pay £600 in essential car repairs. This may not be reflected in your income and expenditure but it is a very real pressure on your finances. Or if you have just lost your job or had some other signifigant life change. Section 4 would be a good place to mention this. It is also an opportunity to explain costs or information which you think may concern us. For example, if you have very high energy costs due to a prepayment meter and single glazing in your home, please be sure to make reference to this in section 4. You do not need to hand write this section if you wish, you can type on a word document and submit this as an additional sheet or convert the PDF to word to type this up prior to submission
Section 5
details your student support. It is important that you complete this section as it is a key area of eligibility for the fund. If you are funded by another body such as Student Finance England, you can omit this section but please remember to include the documentation detailling your award as part of your evidence. If you are an independant student, simply tick "no" and under "other " put Independant Student. If you have not applied to all student support available to you, you will not be eligible for the fund and will be refused.
