Vital Signs
Pulse
A measure of how many heart beats per minute
It can indicate heart rhythm and strength of pulse
Where pulse can be taken
Wrist
Side of neck
Inside of elbow
Healthy adult resting heart rate for adults is 60-100 beats per minute
Athlete heart rate can be 40 beats per minute
Blood Pressure
The force of blood pushing against the artery wall
Measured with a cuff and stethoscope
High blood pressure can cause stroke or heart disease
Normal pressure is 120/80
Body Temperature
The normal body temeperature of an average person
Normal body temperature for an adult is 97.8 degrees F to 99 degrees F
Fever is when the temperature rises 99 degrees F
Hypothermia is when temperature drops passed 95 degrees F
Body temperature can be taken;
Orally
Rectally
Axillary
By ear
By skin
Respiration Rate
The number of breaths per minute
Normal respiration rate is 12-16 breaths per minute
Rates may increase with fever, illness, and other medical conditions
