Biodiversity
Pollution
Consists of chemical substances and particles released into the atmosphere, mainly by human activities
-
Fertilizers, farming (dust), fumes from chemicals
-
-
BIOMAGNIFICATION
Increase in concentration of a substance as it moves up the food chain (toxins)
The last organism in the food chain has a higher concentration of the toxin
DDT magnification nearly caused the extinction of Bald Eagles
Habitat Loss
Habitat Fragmentation: the division of a large habitat area into smaller areas. Affects the amount and type of species that live in the smaller areas.
-
Alien/Invasive Species
-
Usually causes a disruption in the ecosystem.
Results in loss of biodiversity and damage to an ecosystem.
Ex. Asian beetles, zebra mussels, water milfoil, buckthorn
Overexploitation
-
Sharks are being hunted to dangerously low levels for the popularity of shark fin soup.
Sharks are caught, have their fins cut off while they are alive, and then they are thrown back in the ocean to die.
Climate Change
CO2 from burning fossil fuels increases the greenhouse effect
Gases in atmosphere radiate heat back to Earth’s surface (like a blanket)
-
Overpopulation
Human population continues to increase therefore, habitat is lost due to human expansion for housing/buildings, land converted for agricultural use, hunting, fishing, etc…..
