Missouri Compromise: establishes a North/South line for all new Western Territories
Compromise of 1850 allows California to enter as a free state but requires that Northern States support he Fugitive Slave Law
In the case of Dred Scott v. Sandford(1857) the Supreme Court rules that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional and that slavery would be left to an open vote in all states.
The question of Abolition
Harriet Tubman: works to help slaves runaway from the South and seek help in the northern through a series of safe-houses
Harriet Beecher Stowe: Writes "Uncle Tom's Cabin" to demonstrate the cruelties of life for slaves under the plantation system
The Emancipation Proclamation: During the War, President Lincoln issues this law declaring that all slaves in states that are in Rebellion are now free. This does not apply to slaves in Northern Union states.

President Lincoln's actions show that the President may limit civil liberties during times of war.
The President is now able to spend money on the war effort without first getting approval from Congress
