Correct preparation: ensure patient understands warnings and instructions, treatment area is prepared, machine should be energised before connecting to patient (patient should be disconnected before switching off)
Turn up current slowly
Electrode: never adjust electrodes with current on, use proper electrode pads and gels and ensure there are good fixtures
Patient must have way of contracting physiotherapist
Inspect area post-treatment
Documentation: skin sensation, dosage, time, site of application, response, signature etc
Watch for water in vicinity of machines and avoid machines interfering with each other
