How religious experience may lead to belief in God 1.2
Numinous;
a feeling of a presence of God i.e. in a religious building / beautiful place / looking at the stars = belief in God
Conversion;
an experience of God that is so great people want to change their lives / religion & commit to God = feel called by God so believe
Miracle;
event that breaks a law of science & can only be explained by God, the only explanation is that God did it = start believing in God
Prayer;
if a person feels God is listening = believe God exists. Answered prayers = belief in God
Why evil & suffering may lead to agnosticism or atheism 1.9
Moral evil;
humans using their free will to cause suffering
Natural evil;
suffering not caused by humans
if God is omnipotent the he can remove evil & suffering from the world
if God is omni-benevolent he must want to remove all evil & suffering
= if God exists there should be no evil or suffering in the world = as there is evil & suffering either God is not all good / powerful
or
God does not exist
if God is omniscient he must have known the evil & suffering then he could have avoided creating evil & suffering
How a Catholic upbringing may lead to belief in God 1.1
main features
baptise babies
teach children to believe in God
teach children to pray to God take children to Mass = learn to worship God
send children to Catholic school
Catholic parents have told them about God & believe them
Catholics pray to God so believe that God exists as parents would not waste time
seeing so many people worship God at Mass so make them believe God exists
taught God exists at school so believe it because teachers tell them
How Catholics respond to scientific explanations of the world 1.6
Response 1;
only God could have made the Big Bang at exactly the right time
only God could have made laws such as gravity
only God could have made gases to create life
Response 2;
both Bible & science are correct - God's days could be millions / billions of years
The argument from design & belief in God 1.3
anything designed needs a designer
evidence of design (gravity / magnetism / DNA)
if the world is designed then the world must have been designed
the only possible designer of something so wonderful is God
appearance of design it world proves God exists
The argument from causation & belief in God 1.4
cause and effect is a basic feature of the world
eg.
doing homework (cause) will please teachers (effect)
means universe, the world & humans must have had a cause
God is the only logical cause
therefore God must exist
Scientific explanation of the world & agnosticism & atheism 1.5
matter is eternal
Big Bang theory
stars & the solar system
gases on Earth's surface produced life
2.5 million years ago humans evolved
Why unanswered prayers may lead to agnosticism / atheism 1.7
Unanswered prayers;
prayers not answered = think God don't like them / God doesn't exist
eg.
if you pray to God to help your sick child but they die then the person may lose faith in God
eg.
pray for ending of human suffering from wars, droughts, earthquakes ect. = stop believing as God lets this happen
How Catholics respond to unanswered prayers 1.8
praying for selfish things
God might have different plans for that person
God gives what we need not what we want
it may not look like a direct answer
faith that God will answer all prayers, even if its different from what they expected
