Seedfolks
Kim
Citation- Tone- Kim has lots of different tones in her chapter. In some parts she is sad, cold hopeful and, determined. She is sad because she does not know her dad and jealous of her sisters and mom for knowing her."My own tears come as well, but for a different (...) Worse He had no memory of me (2 and 3).
Image- Color- I would think of the color green for Kim because she is planting the lima beans for her dad.
Connections- self to text- I can relate to Kim because I planted lima beans too, in our school garden in kindergarten.
-
Ana
Image- Symbol- The symbol that I chose for Ana is a magnifying glass because she is always investigating neighbors.
Connections- Theme- I think the theme of this chapter is not to assume or jump to conclusions because we may be wrong and hurt people.
Citation- Before and After- Ana is a very snoopy neighbor; so much she is on the verge of being a stalker. But after she digs up Kim's beans she is more careful.I just about knew what she'd buried. Drugs most likely, or money, or a gun(...) I felt like I'd read through her secret diary and ripped out a page without meaning to (...) That afternoon I bought some binoculars"(6,7,8)
-
Wendell
Citation- First Wendell did not like calls but now one made him happy. "School janitors take too much bossing all week" to "That Monday I brought a shovel home from work"(10,11).
Image- color- I think yellow describes Wendell because he is from Kentucky and when I picture Kentucky I picture dry yellow grasslands.
-
Connections- text to world- some people say the glass is half full or empty and Wendell turned his view around from empty to full on the promising wasteland lot.
.Gonzalo
-
I can relate to Gonzalo because one of my friends moved from Columbia to the U.S. and we all helped him as a class. he learned the language in half a year.
Citation- Gonzalo goes from thinking of his grandpa as a baby to a man. "He'd changed from a baby back into a man"(17).
-
Leona
Citation- I think Leona had a change in perspective in her chapter because she went from thinking Kim, Wendell, and Gonzalo's grandpa were poor people looking for money to seeing that they were gardening. "I thought maybe they were looking for money. Turned out they had shovels not metal detectors"(19).
-
Connections- I can connect Leona to kim because they both planted plants in honor of their dead family members.
-
Sam
Connections- I can connect Sam to a comedian because he plays with words "like a cat who smells herring"
-
-
Citation- I think the citation "I get 'em looking up at me instead of down or off to the side"(24) sums up Sam as a nice helpful person to the community.
Virgil
-
-
-
Citation- Since Virgil uses similes a lot I will quote him on one. "The ground was so hard, the tip of my shovel bounced off it like it was a pogo stick"
Sae Young
-
-
-
Sae Young changes from insecure and afraid of everyone to feeling part of the "family". "I no more like to be with people(...) Feel part of garden. Almost like family"37,39.
Curtis
-
-
-
Curtis changes from jerk to caring. "Thats short for Biceps R.Us. Actually I started that name(...)banged their heads together and shut 'em up but I didn't. That was all part of the tomatoes"40,43.
Nora
Connections- I can connect to Nora because I have been to lots of events planning to watch , but left having participated in the fun.
-
Citation- "I determined that Mr. Miles should do no more than just watch" to The Gibb street garden is there" She goes from being skeptical to being proud like it was hers.
-
Amir
The image for Amir is the garden because it was his way of fitting in and feeling part of the community.
-
Citation- "...at least you know your neighbors, Here you can not say that (...) garden. There you felt part of the community." This represents the fact that Amir had found a place to fit in, the garden.
-
Florence
Citation- "I had to settle to be a watcher" this quote means she wants to be apart of the garden and other things to get the most out of life.
-
I can relate to Florence because sometimes I want to do something but couldn't for some reason so I just watch, like sports on T.V.
-
Marcella
-
Theme- I think the theme for Marcella's chapter is to look at the bright side. She is constantly trying to look for the bad things.
Citations- "Eating our babies alive or dropping them into dumpsters". to "I stopped wishing my baby would die". This represents how Marcella learns to live with herself and the circle of life.
