Seed Folk
Kim
Citation: "He [her father] would watch my beans break ground and spread, and would notice with pleasure their pods growing plump" (3).
Color that represents this character: Purple, or royal blue. Because to me those colors represent determination and loyalty.
I can relate to Kim because my great grandma died when I had never met her. She was a really great person and I wish I would have got to know her because she was part of my family history an everyone loved her...
Needless to say the funeral was really awkward for me.
Amir
I think the citation that best summarizes the chapter the best is, "Not one of us had chased a criminal before. And most likely we wouldn't have except near the garden. There you felt part of the community." I bolded the last sentence best his chapter is all about the community.
Purple represents the chapter best because it symbolizes compassion, and loyalty. In my opinion that sums up most the chapter.
The theme of this chapter is that everyone in a community is important, because in the chapter people who had never talked and had just been in the same community united, stopped a criminal, and helped each other out.
Sae Young
I will predict that Sae Young will become a big part of the garden, a citation to support this is, "Feel like part of the garden. Feel like part of the family" (39).
I think Gonzalo's Tio Juan relates to Sae Young because they both opened up when they started being part of the garden.
I think that the setting changing with Sae Young and helps her to change. At first she was secluded in her dry cleaning store not speaking much English, but when she started going to the garden she opened up and had a reason to speak English to people.
Sam
The color that represents Sam is blue for trust, peace, and stability, because that's what he's trying to restore in the community
I the moral of the chapter is that a little goes a long way. I think this because in the chapter sam said that he stopped trying to save the world and switched battlefields to Cleveland, and thinks he's made more of a difference since.
The citation that best summarizes the chapter is, "You've seen fishermen mending the rips in their nets. That's what I do, only with people... Sewing up the rips in the neighborhood" (24).
Virgil
At the beginning of the chapter Virgil was resentful towards the lettuce and now he's feeling sad that it died, a citation to support this is, "That night I pulled out the locket. [...] Then I whispered, "Save our lettuce." "(35).
I think the color that represents this Virgil is orange for youth, and vitality. Because he seems like he's fine with being busy in the summer and is pretty young.
I can relate to this character because my parents have made me do stuff that I didn't want to that I ended up actually caring about...
Maricela
The color that represents this chapter is red/pink for anger, regret, and sass, because Maricela is regretful and angry at/for the baby. Also she's just sassy.
I can relate Maricela because they both were both were though a lot of themselves, but they changed throughout their respective chapters.
I think the change in the character throughout the chapter was very noticeable- although its not till the last few sentences. At first Maricela was very self pitying and regretful because she's a pregnant teenager and wants to miscarry, but at the end she accepts how she is and is happy for her body to be "part of nature". A quote to support this is, "My body was part of nature.[...] And just for that minute I stopped wishing my baby would die" (57).
Anna
I can infer that Anna is very presumptuous, one citation that supports that is "After 20 years typing for the Parole department, I just about knew what she buried" (6).
Citation: "I've seen history out this window," (4). and, "After 20 years typing for the Parole department, I just about knew what she buried" (6).
I think that a symbol that best represents Anna a bad auto correct . It sees everything and assumes things that you didn't type/do.
Leona
I think the citation that sums up Leona's spirit is, "I'd knew I'd be having to say the same thing to fifteen or twenty government folks.[..] I might as well be comfortable while I'm on hold"(19).
I think the object that is most important to this chapter is a trash bag because that is Leona's motivation for trying to clean the garden lot, and what made her get called into the meeting so fast.
I can relate Leona to Rosa Parks because they're both African American women who put their foot down to something that's just wrong.
Nora
I think the most important object in this chapter was Mr. Miles wheelchair because it normally would hold him back but Nora was determined to work around it.
I think the theme of this chapter was don't let life get in your way. Because in the chapter Mr. Miles who is old and stuck in a wheelchair gets to garden and be part of the community.
The citation that best summarizes the chapter is, "I was determined that Mr. Miles should do more than watch, wheelchair or not " (48).
Florence
The color that represents this chapter is white because it represents the snow that blocked the farmers from farming and planting their crops on the lot.
The theme of Florence's chapter is good things are worth waiting for. In the chapter, Florence is somebody who watches the garden, and when its not summer the plants die because of the cold, the community died with it. Nobody could go back to the garden, but when it was summer it was especially special and the garden snapped into action almost at once.
I think the narrator's tone was sadness/depression because, in the book it says "Snow in April always breaks your heart.[...]Waiting for the snow to melt was like waiting for a glacier to move" (69).
Wendell
I think that a theme of Wendell's chapter is Don't assume the worst, I say this because when he gets the phone call from Anna he immediately assumed she was dying or something of the sort.
I think that the most important object in this chapter the is the rings that he made around Kim's plants, because it showed her he was just helping her plants, and she adopted the technique.
-
Curtis
I think the window was the most important object in this chapter is the window because he's constantly checking it and angling thing towards it.
The theme of this chapter is either people change, or you have ot grow up at some point. Because in this chapter Curtis changes from a not committal and show person into a dedicated and caring person.
Before Curtis was a cocky boy and at the end he is a dedicated man, one quote that explains this is, "I was showing Lateeesha that just because I got muscle, doesn't mean I'm some jungle beast.
Gonzalo
I think the lines that sums up this chapter best are, "The older you are, the younger you get when you move to the United States" (13) and, "He'd changed from a baby back into a man" (17).
I think that the best symbol that represents him is a TV. Because he learns from the TV, and its what taught him English.
I think the theme of this chapter is don't jump to conclusions because Gonzalo assumes that just because his Tio juan can't speak English he was like a baby and didn't know anything, when in reality he knew all about farming.
