Rime of The Ancient Mariner
Plot
1 The guys are on their way to a wedding celebration when an old sailor stops one of them at the door
2 The mariner begins his story
3 The Mariner falls into a sweet sleep, and it finally rains when he wakes up. A storm strikes up in the distance, and all the dead sailors rise like zombies to pilot the ship. The sailors don't actually come back to life. Instead, angels fill their bodies, and another supernatural spirit under the ocean seems to push the boat.
4 After a speedy journey the ship ends up back in port again. The mariner sees angels standing next to all the bodies of his crewmates.
5 When they get on shore, the Mariner is desperate to tell his story to the hermit. He feels a terrible pain until the story had been told.

Part I
1 There is a wedding and an old man stops one of the guests to tell the story of a cursed ship
2 The old Mariner has some magiv power in his eye and forces the young man to listen.
3 The ship sails from England to the antarctic, becomes stranded in the ice and fog until an Albatross shows up and the then the ice splits and the ship sails through to the Pacific Ocean
4 Although the bird is playful and friendly to the mariners, and seems to be a good omen, the mariner shoots the bird with his crossbow
Theme
1 Pride-- is an imprtant mistke that humans make and we should be humble in the face of mother nature
2 Nature vs. Supernatural-- our place in the natural world and our relationship with the supernatural
3 Ambivalence--doubt and misgiving in the face of a complicated and mysterious world.
Historical Context:The Industrial Revolution is the name given the movement in which machines changed people's way of life as well as their methods of manufacture. About the time of the American Revolution, the people of England began to use machines to make cloth and steam engines to run the machines. The industrial revolution was the most historical event going on during this time.
Part III
Spent a long time drifting on the ocean with no wind or water and everyone is sick of it. The mariner sees something coming from the west; as in, the opposite direction as the mariners sweet home england.
Can't decide whether the thing is a small speck or a more spread out mist
Imagine death as the hooded guy with the sickle or something like that while life in death is a woman who appears relatively normal except for her pale diseased looking skin
Night falls and the mysterious ghost ship sails away.
There are 200 men on the boat besides the mariner and they all die. Their souls escape their dead bodies and shoot past the mariner like the crossbow with which he shot the albatross
Part IV
Cole ridge isn't super obvious about it but at this point the wedding guest interrupts the story to make another futile attempt at escape.
After the mariner tells the ghost story the wedding guest notices that the mariner looks a bit like a ghost himself.
He tries to say a prayer to save his soul but then he hears an evil voice like a little devil on his shoulder that saps his enthusiasm for praying.
At night the moon rises again and the moonlight falls on the ship like frost.
He still sees all kinds of bright colors like a red on the water and a bright elfish white light in the trail of the water snakes.
Part V
Because the curse is lifted he sleeps and when he wakes up it's raining-- then the wind is moving and the clouds are flying by showing him glimpses of the stars
The dead sailors rise and start to work the ropes the way they had when alive
Wedding guest burst in and is afraid of the zombie sailors the mariner reassures him that is was all angels
4.The spirits ly around the boat making sweet sounds, the ship moves on but not from the breeze. The spirit from the land of mist and snow
5 Ship takes off in hurry the mariner falls down and faints and hear 2 voices talking above his head.They say he's the one that shot the bird. He's paid for his crime but will continue to pay.
Part II
5 the sailors blame their ate on the mariner and hag the dead bird around his neck as a sign of guilt
4 the st. elmos fire, and bioluminescence of the algae provoke feelings of superstition in the sailors and they dream that an evil spirit has followed them from the land of mist and snow
3 the ship is stuck in the doldrums near the equator and there are slimy sea creatures and a horrible heat and thirst
2 The sailors initially blame the mariner for killing the bird that brought the breeze but then praise the mariner for killing the bird that brought them out of the land of snow and mist
1 The ship is returning north after sailing through the Antarctic, they are now in the S. pacific

Part VI
The 2 angels are observing the ship as it drives the mariner home to england. the angels don't know who or what is making the ship go.
The mariner wakes up and the dead bodies are standing around him staring at him reminding him of his crime and guilt and the moon is glittering in their eyes.
The breezes start to blow and the mariner is cheered. we have to move forward in our lives despite what has happened it the past.
He realizes that the ship has reached his home. He sees the harbor bay lit beautifully by the moon and sees the pilot and his boy rowing out to help the ship into the harbor to port. then angels come and stand on the bodies of all the dead sailors and wave.
the mariner is excited because the hermit from the woods who is a holy man is in the boat too and the mariner thinks he can cleanse his soul.
