Collisions, Damage and Injury
In a collision the velocities of the objects colliding are parallel, for example if Object A hits Object B, then Object B hits Object A with an equal force
Acceleration is the rate of change of an object's velocity over time. Most injuries are caused by rapid acceleration (normally slowing down)
-
Conservation of Momentum
Recoil
The total momentum of a gun and a bullet is 0. If the bullet is fired the momentum is still 0. The bullet moves faster than the gun but has a smaller mass meaning their forces cancel out.
Explosion
Before an explosion the total momentum is 0. After an explosion the momentum is still 0, each fragment flies off in a different direction. The momentum of one fragment will cancel out the momentum of another fragment moving in the opposite direction.
-
Collision
If two objects join the momentum after the collision must equal the sum of their individual momentums.
