How can we teach children HOW TO APPLY the knowledge they receive in school?
Provide Opportunities for them to practice
Give them responsibility
look at ways to improve on their weaknesses
Teach them "failure" really means "not yet"
Follow through with consequences
Spend time talking honestly with them

Share your personal experiences with them
Ask them questions about how they see the world
Ensure your children know that you "like" them
Celebrate EVERY accomplishment
Affirm/Appreciate their positive efforts

What activities do THEY enjoy?
Are you pushing sports when they are really into music or vice-versa?
Train them in the way they should go
Speak their language; get into what they are into (understand it)
Encourage them to exercise their creativity/imagination muscle
Video games & tv develop a laziness
Can also hinder their vocabulary growth
