Brainstorm of Kiosk ideas
User Requirements
Target Audience:
The kiosk will be targeted to users of all ages so that it everyone will be able to obtain information from it helping it achieve its main purpose.
Touch Screen:
The kiosk will have a touch screen interface so that the user can interact with it with ease.
Keyboard:
The keyboard will be a touchscreen keyboard using a software that is integrated in the touchscreen.
Screen Size:
The screen size should be large enough for the user to comfortably view yet not be too small for it to be difficult to operate.
Form
Colour Scheme
: The kiosk should have a consistent colour scheme and not something that is not aesthetically pleasing as it would discourage people from using it making it not fit for its own purpose.
Images
: The kiosk’s images (if it has any) should represent where the kiosk is from and what it is doing so for example; a Bahraini theme would suffice in this context. In my opinion a minimalistic design with no specific images would be better for the kiosk.
Branding & Logos
: The product should have branding and logos to represent who the manufacturer is, however, it should not
Function
Single or two people use
: The kiosk should be designed to assist multiple people so that many people do not need to wait before using it.
Information Only:
The kiosk will provide information as that is its main purpose; to provide information to those who require it. If in a shopping mall, it will provide information of all the shops and their locations, cinema movie timings and sales.
Ticket Distribution:
The kiosk will have the ability to distribute tickets if the user chooses to purchase them from it. For example; if the kiosk is in a mall, people can buy movie tickets and select their seats from it. The kiosk can then print out their ticket.
Payment Options:
The kiosk can have two different options of payment. The user can either pay using credit/debit card or cash. For this to be possible the kiosk would require a credit card reader and a cash vending machine.
Performance Requirements
Durability:
The kiosk should be really durable since many different people will be using it thus it should be able to withstand damage quite easily.
Connection to power:
The product will have its own internal 500W power supply. The power supply does not necessarily have to be internal. If external, the power supply will be hidden as best as possible to avoid visual obstruction.
Connection to internet:
The product has to be connected to the internet via one of the two options; through ethernet cable connection or wireless wifi connection.
System upgrade:
To upgrade the system there will be a side panel accessible to the person who is responsible for managing the kiosk. The firmware can be updated via installation through the USB port and the BIOS Menu.
Sun Damage:
The kiosk will be made from materials that can resist the damage that the Sun may be able to inflict upon it.
Size
Ergonomic & Anthropometric considerations:
The product must be ergonomic so that the user is comfortable and satisfied while using it. This can be done by having reasonable anthropometric considerations such as having an appropriate height so that the average user can use it comfortably or making its height adjustable so that a variety of users can use it.
Material & Components
Material of Casing:
The material used for the casing of the kiosk has to serve its purpose which is making it durable or protecting it from damage externally or internally. This would require using a material which is high in strength such as a plastic or metal.
Computer System:
Internal hardware will consist of computer parts found in a basic computer such as a mother board, central processing unit, graphics processing unit, random access memory and etc. The casing of the product will act as the chassis of the internal hardware; providing ventilation and protection.
Screen Properties:
The screen will preferably be a touch screen as it is the most modern and easy way to interact with kiosks at the moment. It will also be an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen as they are considerably more power efficient than LED screens since the colour black is represented by not having any light being emitted and no black light is needed.
