These people are not allowed to leave the country because defection is feared
Cultural Challenges
Rice is not a crop that is abundant or widespread
This is because of famine and food shortages
People begin to lose their culture because rice is a huge part of North Korean culture
Following a religion is not allowed
This causes people to secretly follow a religion
These people, if they are caught, are sent to prison camps
Economic Challenges
North Korea has a bad economy
Less jobs and opportunities are available for North Koreans
With low-paying jobs or without jobs at all, people do not get much money
People cannot afford to buy enough food
People end up starving or suffering from malnutrition
The government controls food production
Food is sometimes confiscated by the army
Farmers get less food to sell
They do not get as much money from their crops as they could
