M.Lilly 2nd 2016 Grendel
A Coggle Diagram about 1) Grendel drifts down (mentally and physically?) to the realm of the dragon(kinda like the last airbender)
, Then we learn that he lives with his mom in a cave under a lake
, Then we learn that he has been raiding Hrothgar's mead hall for 11 going on 12 years. He busts in the doors and they try to fight him but he just kills them and takes the bodies to eat.
, Grendel sees a ram in heat and understands that it is operating only on instinct. This happens every spring.
, Then Hrothgar and his men show up and wonder what Grendel is
, Grendel gets caught in a tree and is attacked by a bull protecting its calf
, Chapter 1
, Chapter 2
, The humans think Grendel is a fungus, then they think he's a tree spirit
, Grendel realizes that humans are thinkers/pattern makers
, The humans are still fearful and superstitious and react violently to uncertainty
, Then they attack Grendel and he bleeds from their attacks and then he is rescued by his mother
, He observes that the humans are flawed, violent, angry, vicious, lying, deceitful, selfish, braggarts, etc...
, The humans build roads and begin to organize a society
, Grendel observes that they are disparate bands who war and fight needlessly with their neighbors
, Now when bands attack from farther out, a messenger is sent to Hrothgar and he sends fighters to defend them
, Then Hrothgar comes up with the idea of working together with his closest neighbors
, Chapter 3
- Grendel finds a dead and robbed of his clothes. Demonstrating an extreme contrast between the civilized life that is on display at Hart and the ugly side of humanity that hides in the shadows
- Grendel understands the stories are made up but he still wants them to be true and he wants to be a part of the story even if it means he is to be the villain.
, 1 The Shaper continues to sing of the greatness of the Danes and Hrothgar continues to increase the splendor of his realm and mead hall
- Grendel is overcome by the meanness of life and brings the dead body to the door of Hrothgar's hall crying for peace and mercy.
- The Danes are frightened by Grendel and try to kill him. Grendel realizes that they might kill him if they get the chance.
, 2 Hrothgar builds a great hall called Hart and and his fame spreads far and wide. Folks come to bask in the glory of his hall and to hear the Shaper.
, The shaper shows up Hrothgar's mead hall and auditions to be the harper/singer/stroytelller for the hall. He is so good, the previous harper sneaks out the back to look for work else where
, The Shaper tells the history of he Danes in a way that makes them sound noble and righteous and he sings it so well everyone, even Grendel believes it.
, But Grendel also remembers that "it was spring and every sheep had its wobbly twins" and men fought and killed and were brutal.
, Chapter 4
, The humans perform a ritual (funeral) with songs, a pyre and prayer.
, 2) The dragon lives in a cave with bats on the ceiling and piles of treasure all over the floor.
, 3) The dragon is described as having glowing scales that flare up every time he breathes and his voice is like that of an old man's
, 4) Grendel wants to know about the Shaper. Grendel wants to know his place in the universe and what is the meaning of life
, 5) The dragon says there is no purpose to life- that in a million years the universe will end and it won't matter what anyone did
, 6) Grendel insists that there is something to the Shaper's stories. That somehow they are becoming real (propaganda)
, 7) The dragon says that he sees all of time as from a mountain top, the beginning and the end all at the same time
, 8) That humans have their theories about things and those theories are more like spider webs than bridges, but that they rush across chasms on spiderwebs and sometimes they make it. And they think that proves something
, 9) The dragon tells Grendel that by being an adversary to the humans he forces them to improve but that if Grendel disappeared they would find a new enemy-- so again... nothing matters
, Chapter 5
, 10) He tells Grendel to hoard gold (Because that's what the dragon does)- Basically he tells Grendel to do what makes him happy cause in the end it won't matter
, 1) Grendel is surprised by a guard and discovers that the dragon has charmed his flesh. The humans weapons can't harm him.
, 2) Grendel kills the guard in a fit laughter and Nihilism (as if to prove the dragon right)
, 3) A hero appears and challenges Grendel- Uneferth
, 4) Through a slip of accident Grendel decides to mock him and throw apples at Unferth and refuses to fight or kill him
, 5) Unferth follows Grendel back to his cave and nearly dies in attempt t
, Chapter 6
, 6) Unferth talks big about what a hero is but he is nearly dead and his words are hollow
, 7) Grendel decides that he is not going to kill Unferth but that he intends to rob him of his dream of dying a hero's death and spares him when he raids Hrothgar's hall
, 1) Hrothgar marches his army to a neighboring King because that king is getting too strong
, 2) Grendel was excited because it was going to be a bloody battle
, 3) The armies square off and then the talking begins
, 4) Hrothgar does not accept the gifts of peace until they offer Wealtheow in marriage to mind the two tribes together
, 5) Grendel is beside himself and struck by her beauty, innocence, and goodness
, 6) Grendel perceives that she inspires and improves the Danes in a way that the Shaper does not: she does not lie or tell stories, she is simply who she is
, 7) Grendel decides to raid the hall and kill the Queen in a fit of Nihilism, determined to convince the Danes ( and maybe himself) that nothing matters
, 8) He decides in the end that it would be equally pointless to kill her or not so he leaves her alive
