,
- •Why are people in the United States hungry when there is so much food?
,
- •Why do immigrants to the U.S. become less healthy in the months and years after they arrive than they were when they first came here?
,
- •Why are folks in one neighborhood dying an average of 20 years younger than folks on the other side of the same town?
,
- •What policies are needed to correct each of these problems?
,
- •Identify at least ten social factors that influence the health of these various groups of Americans.
,
•12: Recognize the unequal distribution of health care by race, gender, social class, ethnicity, and geographic region within the U.S.,
- The growing divide between the upper and lower social class has created obstacles that lower class people must challenge to keep themselves in good health. In the theoretical town people on one side are in the upper class while the people in the other are in the lower class. The people in the upper class section live longer because they have a larger number of resources at their disposal to improve and ensure good health while the lower class have much less access to these same health care resources mainly due it's price. Basic things like fresh, healthy, food are less available to lower class people and they are forced to consume cheaper, less healthy, products.
,
- When immigrants enter the United States they often find that they have become less healthy over a period of months or years. They have issues finding high paying jobs and face a number of financial challenges from paying off loans that are hard to get to finding healthy food on a regular basis with the existing financial constraints. Along with the sense of social and financial threat comes a high level of stress. The videos explain that constant stress releases certain hormones from the endocrine system that cause plaque build up and increase the chance for many diseases in addition to the unhealthy food they consume due to financial limits.
,
- People in the U.S. have many sources for food at their disposal with many options within each yet a large number of people are hungry. The upper class is virtually free from the lack of food but the lower class is subjected to so many financial constraints that they must balance their bills with their diet. Excessive bureaucratization in many parts of society, especially health care, has led to high prices and low payments to the lower class workers which makes it increasingly harder to afford a full diet.
,
- The government has made an effort to improve the availability of health care for all Americans but more policies to ensure good health could be enacted. An improvement on the Affordable Health Care Act should be made so that not only urgent health care matters are easier to afford but the majority of health care. Policies should implemented that give more incentive to doctors if they move to a geographic region where small numbers of skilled doctors exist. Included in these policies should be measures to make primary care physicians more affordable and dispersed in a wider range of the nation. Finally the government should limit the expense of medications developed by pharmaceutical companies and place the price in a range where lower class groups can afford them.
