In exchange for the right to establish a farm, habitants had to clear the land plant crops, and build a house.Habitants often gave up their farms, to do illegal fur trading with the First Nations instead.
They became Courier de Bois. Seigneurs and habitats often ended up in court, answering complaints that they had not followed through on their obligations.
Seigneurs

Most men were seigneurs from noble families, but women and commoners could become seigneurs.
To keep their land grants, the had to recruit habitants to farm them.
The Catholic Church
The Church established schools, hospitals, and orphanages in New France, and played an important role in governing the colony. The clergy were among a small group of educated people who could read and write. They were consulted before making important decisions, including decisions that the politics and economy of the colony.
Like, the British were Protestants that had laws preventing Catholics to serve in the government.
The Jesuits, a Catholic religious order, were and imperative part of the Catholic Church of New France. They converted the First Nations to be Catholics, and they documented their languages.

Merchants are people like blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers, and butchers.
They made their living through the fur trade. They bought furs from First Nations, courier de bois, and other colonists. They sold furs to France, for profit, they hoped.
Voyageurs

They were men from New France who travelled between the fur merchants of Montreal and the fur trade posts of the Great Lakes, and later, further west.
The Sovereign Council

He worked to be less reliant on France, and to keep the colony in good order. He looked for new ways to exploit the colony to benefit France.
