Most foods that animals eat should be transformed into simpler substances. This process of breaking down food into nutrients is called digestion, which takes place in the digestive system
Outdoor
The digestive system of animals includes a large tube, the digestive tract, through which food travels and transforms.
The digestive tract begins in the mouth and continues through the oesophagus until it reaches a muscular organ in the form of a sac called the stomach.
Then, it becomes narrower and continues in a large tube, the small intestine, followed by the large intestine, which ends in the anus.
digestion
chemicals
chemical digestion, the digestive juices released throughout the digestive tract transform food into a liquid with small soluble molecules called nutrients. These nutrients are absorbed through the wall of the small intestine into the blood, which carries nutrients to all the cells in the body.
mechanics
mechanical digestion, food is chewed and ground in the mouth. It does not occur in animals that eat liquid foods, or in animals that swallow all their prey.
digestive tract adapts to the eating habits of each animal. Carnivores and herbivores have different types of digestive tracts.
The herb is difficult to digest and is not very nutritious. Herbivores have a long digestive tract that contains a bag called blind, where food is stored temporarily.
Meat is easy to digest and very nutritious. Carnivores have a shorter digestive tract and the caecum is small or nonexistent.
