Unit 3: Storage devices
Magnetic storage devices
Hard Disk
An electromagnetic data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store and retrieve digital data
Magnetic tape
A medium for magnetic recording, made of a thin, magnetizable coating on a long, narrow strip of plastic film
Floppy disk
A type of disk storage composed of a disk of thin and flexible magnetic storage medium, sealed in a rectangular plastic enclosure lined with fabric that removes dust particles
Optical storage devices
CD-R
It stands for "Compact Disc-Recordable". The term "Record-able" is used because it's often used to record audio which can be played by MOST CD Players. It's a compact disc that can be written once and read irrationally many times. It can also be erased and COMPLETELY re-recorded
CD-RW
It stands for "Compact Disc-ReWritable". It's a digital optical disc storage format that can be written, read arbitrarily many times, erased, and written again. It was first introduced on 17th August 1982. The advantage of it is, most computer can read them and even though there is no CD Player, sometimes DVD Player can read it. But the disadvantage of it is it has smaller storage capacity than DVD and Hard Disk
CD-ROM
It stands for "Compact Disc-Read Only Memory". It's one of many optical storage devices that can be read by a computer with an optical drive. It's designed to store computer data in the form of graphics and text. The advantage of it is it could store such a high-capacity of data but the disadvantage of it is if there is no electricity so our computer won't work and this will resulting the CD-ROM wont work as well
DVD-R
DVD recordable and DVD rewritable are optical disc recording technologies. It can be recorded by a DVD recorder, either write-once or rewritable format written by laser, as compared to DVD-ROM, which is technically mass-produced by pressing, primarily for the distribution of home video. The advantages of it are it has very large storage capacity which is 4-9 GB and it produces an excellent quality of sound and picture while the disadvantages of it are there is no single standard of DVD and it won't work in CD Player
Blu-Ray Disc
It is a digital optical disc storage device that's designed to supersede the DVD Format. It's capable to store high quality and large capacity of videos and photos. Some blu-ray disc could even store a 4K Movies. It is fragile so it must be put in a safe place or else if it's broken the CD Player won't recognize it
DVD-RW
DVD itself stands for Digital Video Disc and Digital Versatile Disc and RW stands for Rewrite-able. It's better for editing on DVD recorders. The advantage of it is it's rewritable with the same (or even higher capacity) storage capacity than DVD-R but the disadvantage of it is it requires more power due to higher speed drives for output
