Journeys very slow, but did improve with new surfaces
Used a horse and carriage
Used as travel for the rich and send small light items
Growth of towns and cities made the need for good transport essential
The growth of Railways followed in the 1800s
Transport used by ordinary people for the first time.
Meant people could commute and go on holiday
This greatly improved travel times
Rivers and Canals
Effective way to carry heavy goods for the first time e.g coal
Canals were dug by hand, expensive and hard work
New factories produced goods which needed to be taken to markets or ports for sale
Pottery
Machinery
Iron
etc etc
