How can differentiated instruction be used to assist students who are struggling?
There are a number of ways students can be helped with their difficulties:
Content – Choose different content to appeal to the interests of a child who is disinterested
Support – Having an adult helping with a task while others work independently
Materials – Choose appropriate level of materials (e.g. reading books)
Scaffolding – Prepare materials which give children extra support (e.g. a writing frame, word banks, more strategies)
Outcome – Adjust expectations for the level or quantity of the work produced
What are the signs of a struggling student?
Students will sometimes hide difficulties. They may appear too confident but really, they are distracting attention away from what they need to do. Students will focus on their strengths rather than their areas for development.
